This handball tournament is not just about winning – it is also a qualifier for the 27th IHF Women’s Handball World Championship, which will be held in Germany and the Netherlands from November 27 to December 14, 2025. The top four teams from this tournament will secure a place in the World Championship.

The Republic of Korea is the most successful team in the history of the tournament, having won 16 titles out of 19 editions. Other winners include Kazakhstan, which has won two titles (2002 and 2010), and Japan, which won the tournament only in 2004.

Korea and Japan have participated in all 19 previous editions of the championship, while the People’s Republic of China has participated in just 18. Only the 2021 competition was missed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the championship began in 1987, Korea has won a medal in every tournament, including 16 gold, 2 silver and one bronze medal.
