The Indian Constituent Assembly adopted it on 26 November 1949 and it came into force on 26 January 1950 to make India an independent republic and establish the rule of law in the country.
The date of 26 January was chosen to implement it because on this day in 1930, the Indian National Congress declared complete independence of India.
On the morning of Republic Day, the Prime Minister pays tribute at the ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti War Memorial’.
This marks the beginning of the official celebrations of Republic Day.
India’s Republic Day celebrations begin on 23 January (Parakram Diwas or the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose).
The old name of the path of duty was Rajpath where the first parade was held in 1955. It was changed from ‘Rajpath’ to ‘Kartavya Path’ in 2022 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This route starts from Rashtrapati Bhavan and goes up to India Gate.
Before 2022, the Indian Republic Day celebrations used to start from 24 January but in the year 2022, the central government changed the date of Republic Day celebrations to 23 January by including Netaji Subhash Chandra’s birth anniversary as a part of the Republic Day celebrations.
In 1950, the chief guest of the first Republic Day parade was President “Sukarno” of Indonesia.
The national anthem is played at the beginning and end of the Republic Day parade.
