National Doctor’s Day 2024 History

India celebrated the first Doctor’s Day on July 1, 1991. The greatest doctor in India, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, was born on July 1st and passed away on the same day. It is therefore a testimony to his accomplishments in the country’s healthcare industry.

Born in Patna, Bihar, on July 1, 1882, was Dr. Bidhan Chandra  Roy. He obtained his MRCP and FRCS degrees in London after completing his medical graduation from Calcutta. In 1911, he started working as a doctor in India. After that, he became a faculty member at Calcutta Medical College before transferring to the Campbell Medical School and ultimately the Carmichael Medical College.

In addition to being a well-known doctor, he was also a prominent educator and a freedom fighter. He followed Mahatma Gandhi in the Act of Civil Disobedience. After that, he rose to the position of Indian National Congress leader and later he became the Chief Minister of West Bengal for over 14 years and was kindly addressed as the “Maker of Bengal.”

On July 1, 1962, he passed from this life after serving the nation successfully for 80 years.

 Established in 1976, the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award is given to the most talented individuals who support the growth of specializations in various medical fields. On February 4, 1961, Dr. Roy was given the highest Indian civilian award, the “Bharat Ratna”.
